What Did He Mean by That?

🎙 Episode Title: What is Sin?

📅 Release Date: June 26th, 2025

🎧 Host(s):  Dr. Christopher Cali, Pastor Chris Heimerle, Ashley Cali, & Robby McKinney.

Episode Summary:

In this episode, the team unpacks Pastor Chris’s message from John 5, exploring the question: What is sin? Through honest conversation, they challenge long-standing cultural taboos within the Church—like gambling, drinking, and music—and emphasize the importance of defining sin through Scripture, not tradition or personal bias. They explore how God’s moral law is rooted in creation, not just rules, and how heart attitude matters more than outward behavior. The conversation also touches on sexuality, addiction, legalism, and how churches often elevate preference to the level of doctrine. Listeners are encouraged to develop discernment, embrace personal conviction without imposing it on others, and focus on the deeper love and holiness God calls us to.

Key Discussion Points:

• Where have I labeled something “sin” that the Bible doesn’t explicitly condemn?
• How am I helping others discern between personal conviction and biblical command?
• In what areas might I be ignoring the weightier matters of God’s law?

Takeaways:

1. Sin is more than external behavior — it’s rooted in the heart.
Jesus expands on the moral law by showing that internal attitudes (like hate or lust) matter just as much as outward actions.
2. The Bible—not tradition—defines sin.
Just because something has been culturally labeled as sin (like rock music, tattoos, or gambling) doesn’t mean it actually is according to Scripture.
3. Wisdom and conviction aren’t the same as universal sin.
Some behaviors may be unwise or even sinful for you based on your personal convictions—but that doesn’t mean they are universally sinful for everyone.
4. We often condemn what we don’t struggle with.
Christians may ignore issues like gluttony or materialism while condemning others’ sins, revealing a double standard and lack of self-awareness.
