Episode 116 - Do You Really Own Anything?

What Did He Mean by That?

🎙 Episode Title: Do You Really Own Anything?

📅 Release Date: August 20th, 2026

🎧 Host(s): Dr. Christopher Cali, Pastor Chris Heimerle, Ashley Cali, and Robby Mckinney.

Episode Summary:

This week, we continue our conversation about worship by asking a challenging question: do we really believe everything belongs to God? Beginning with Psalm 24, we explore the illusion of ownership and how easily our possessions, careers, circumstances, and even our sense of identity can become things we try to control and hold onto. Through the life of David, we see what it looks like to recognize God’s sovereignty even when life doesn’t go according to plan. Ultimately, the conversation points us back to the gospel and the freedom of knowing that even our righteousness isn’t something we earn it’s something we receive through faith in Christ. When we understand who God is and what He has given us, worship becomes more than singing. It becomes a life surrendered to Him.

Key Discussion Points:

  • What is something in your life that is easy to think of as “mine” rather than something entrusted to you by God?
  • How can a career, possession, relationship, or position become part of our identity without us realizing it?
  • Why is it sometimes difficult to trust God’s sovereignty when something we value is being taken away or changed?
  • How does recognizing that our righteousness comes from Christ change the way we approach God?

Takeaways:

  1. Everything Belongs to God:

Psalm 24 begins by establishing who owns everything: God does. Worship starts with recognizing that our possessions, positions, opportunities, and lives were never ultimately ours to begin with.

  1. What We Try to Own Can Become an Idol:

Our careers, possessions, accomplishments, and circumstances can quietly become sources of identity and significance. When we begin finding in them what we’re meant to find in God, we’re moving toward idolatry.

  1. Knowing God Helps Us Understand Ourselves:

Scripture isn’t primarily a tool for discovering ourselves. As we see more clearly who God is—His holiness, greatness, and sovereignty, we also begin to understand who we are and how desperately we need His grace.
